Baby killed by rare illness

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 09:56

AN EIGHT-week old baby died after contracting a deadly infection, an inquest heard.

Daniel Hugh Penn passed away on September 30 this year, just eight weeks into his life after he contracted an illness similar to meningitis.

At an inquest into the death, held last Tuesday (November 18), Worthing Coroners Court heard how parents Maggie Penn and Guy David Penn were at home at Wilson Close, Maidenbower when baby Daniel became ill.

The baby was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel where a post mortem was carried out by Dr Irene Scheimberg.

Dr Scheimberg said the cause of death was Enterotoxin D producing Staphylococcus infection, which is thought to be similar to meningitis.

Coroner's officer Barry Markham said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and that an inquest had been held to allow the family to hold a funeral.

Speaking at the inquest, West Sussex coroner Penelope Schofield said: "I am happy to record a verdict of death by natural causes."
