Three Bridges are given a scare by Lancing

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 17:11

Division two side Lancing went two goals up against high-flying division one team Three Bridges in the Sussex Senior Cup before Bridges eventually scraped through 3-2.

But for the first 25 minutes Bridges strolled around the pitch in full command. Dean Wright and Nathan Davis both shot across the front of goal and any attack by Lancing was quickly quashed by the dynamic Mark Zydonik and Tyler Kay at the centre of the Bridges defence.

But on 40 minutes a Lancing corner was cleared to the edge of the box and smashed back in again, Bridges keeper' Mark Fox fumbled the ball to the feet of striker Adam Burton who crashed the ball over the line.

Bridges looked shell shocked and with just five minutes left until half-time a goal kick came straight back at the visitors with midfielder Robert O'Toole taking on two defenders and going around the keeper to put Lancing two up.

The second half started brightly for Bridges and they soon got back to retaining the ball and creating chances, but there was no way past the Lancing goalkeeper.

Then on 65 minutes a well taken free-kick from Carl Dunk was crossed to the far post where captain Marlon Maxwell was waiting and headed Bridges back into the game.

And four minutes later a carbon copy of the first goal was headed home by Davis to equalise.

With extra-time looming a penalty was awarded by one of the assistants and hotly disputed by the hosts.

Dunk stepped up and calmly put away the spot-kick to put Bridges through to a third round tie against ground sharers Horsham at Worthing. After the final whistle the Lancing manager was red carded for aggressively disputing the penalty.
